Daylight Saving Time

You know the old saying: spring forward, fall back. It helps us to remember how Daylight Saving Time affects our clocks twice each year.

During Daylight Saving Time, which begins in the spring, clocks are turned forward an hour. When Daylight Saving Time ends in the fall, clocks are set back an hour and Standard Time resumes.

The present schedule is determined by the Energy Policy Act of 2005. In effect, the United States springs forward at 2:00 am on the second Sunday in March, and falls back at 2:00 am on the first Sunday in November.

Incidentally, the correct term is daylight saving time, not daylight savings time. If you had it wrong, don't feel bad. The latter is used most often during online searches.

The correct term is daylight saving time, not daylight savings time. Nevertheless, more people search for the incorrect version when doing research online!

2019 SCHEDULE
United States 2019 Daylight Saving Time Schedule
In the United States, Daylight Saving Time began Sunday, March 10 and will revert to Standard Time on Sunday, November 3. Time changes in the United States are staggered and take place at 2:00 am local time.

European Union 2019 Summer Time Schedule
In the European Union, Summer Time will begin Sunday, March 31 and will end Sunday, October 27. Unlike the United States where time switches take place according to local time, all time zones in the European Union change simultaneously at 1:00 am Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

Daylight Saving Time USA
In the United States, clocks change at 2:00 am local time. Why was 2:00 am chosen? It was believed that work schedules, businesses, transportation schedules, and sleeping habits would be disrupted as little as possible at that time of day.

When Daylight Saving Time was first instituted in the early 1900s, most people were home at night and went to bed early. More importantly, during early morning hours there were fewer trains running than any other time of day. Even today, a 2:00 am time switch is practical because the entire country is on the new schedule by morning.

Daylight Saving Time presents a problem in states that restrict bars from serving alcohol between 2:00 and 6:00 am. The solution varies from state to state, but many bars and restaurants satisfy the law (and their customers) by allowing liquor to be served until "two hours after midnight."

Working Fire Detectors Save Lives

Daylight Saving Time provides a convenient twice-yearly reminder to check and change your smoke detector batteries. When they remind you to change your clocks, local newscasters invariably include a reminder from the fire department to change smoke detector batteries and replace broken smoke detectors.

It pays to take their advice to heart. According to the experts, properly functioning smoke detectors can more than double your chances of surviving a home fire.

More than 90 percent of United States homes have smoke detectors, but at least a third of them are presumed to contain dead batteries, or worse yet, no batteries.

Play it safe and take a few minutes to check, repair, and replace the smoke detectors in your home, garage, and workplace.
