Fool the Eye with Trompe L' Oeil Window Murals

Wallpaper window murals are the fastest and easiest way to create an interesting focal point in your home or office. Not only are Trompe l'oeil murals beautiful—most are prepasted and easy to apply to walls or other flat surfaces.

Choose from several designs including the rolling hills of a Tuscan countryside, a grazing pasture, a mountain cabin, or a Parisian balcony, just to name a few. I've applied several of these windows, and they're perfect for dark corners or boring walls where you need just a touch of excitement.

The Wallies wall decor line is one of my favorites, and features a variety of vinyl-coated, prepasted designs. Installation is a breeze—just dip pieces in water and apply with a sponge. They're up in minutes. Apply them to walls, wood, glass, or use them for craft projects.

I've spent hours stenciling wall art, and these colorful, fool-the-eye designs are just as beautiful and not as permanent. When you tire of a design, they're easy to remove and won't damage your walls. I've included a selection of windows and coordinating cutouts. Hopefully you'll find something right for your home or office.

Curtained Seaside Window and Starfish Cutouts

The Wallies seaside window mural shown above is a discontinued design, but it's sometimes available online. We placed one over a headboard to create a cheerful “Bikini Bottom” theme when my step-son was big on SpongeBob. Murals are great over beds because you don't have to worry about them falling down in an earthquake.

This mural has been up for many years, and still looks brand new. All I've done is wipe it down with a clean, damp sponge from time to time. We’re in the process of redecorating this bedroom, so the window will eventually be coming down. I did save the starfish cutouts and will be using them in craft projects.

Tuscany and Wine Accents
Wine Tasting and Tuscan Architectural Tile Cutouts

Wine themed cutouts are great for decorating a wine cellar or bar area. I used a dozen of these Tuscan architectural “tiles” to accentuate a terra cotta painted stairwell that went from my garage to the first floor. They’re easy to apply and will add a touch of elegance to an otherwise boring wall. Just dip in warm water and place on any flat surface.

The two-sheet Grazing Pastures mural creates one window 37-1/4 inches by 44 inches. Dip in water to activate the backing, then gently apply to a clean, dry surface and blot with a slightly moistened sponge to remove bubbles and air.

Three Wallpaper Panels are Prepasted, Vinyl-Coated, and Easy to Remove

The stained glass wallpaper mural is prepasted, vinyl coated, and strippable. The mural is easily applied to most smooth surfaces. Stained glass mural pieces are vibrantly colored and include two panels measuring 7 inches by 20 inches and one panel 18 inches by 30 inches. Submerge each panel in water for approximately 60 seconds, remove and drain off excess water, then apply to desired surface. Gently blot with a sponge to remove excess water and smooth out trapped air bubbles.
